The Crustal Stress Field Inferred From Focal Mechanisms in Northern Chile

چکیده

We study the spatial variability of crustal stress in northern Chile. A margin-parallel compressive regime is inferred along coastal region between 19° and 23.5°S, similar to observations Cascadia Japan. The Andean Precordillera shows a distinct field associated with strike-slip faulting around 21°S. These results are constrained by over decade observations, for which earthquake catalogs report thousands events continental crust. present focal mechanisms 817 these earthquakes, including mechanism qualities. best were grouped inverted infer stress-field variability. interpret compression be caused concave shape margin locking plate interface. Andes agrees previous studies has been proposed mostly local stresses imposed thicker

Determining the Stress Field in Active Volcanoes Using Focal Mechanisms

Stress inversion of seismological datasets became an essential tool to retrieve the stress field of active tectonics and volcanic areas. In particular, in volcanic areas, it is able to put constrains on volcano-tectonics and in general in a better understanding of the volcano dynamics. During the last decades, a wide range of stress inversion techniques has been proposed, some of them specifica...

Crustal anisotropy across northern Japan from receiver functions

Northern Japan is a tectonically active area, with the presence of several volcanoes, and with frequent earthquakes among which the destructive Mw  = 8.9-9.0 Tohoku-oki occurred on 11 March 2011. Tectonic activity leaves an imprint on the crustal structures, on both the upper and the lower layers. To investigate the crust in northern Japan, we construct a receiver function data set using telese...

PETROLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF CRUSTAL XENOLITHS FROM 1961 ERUPTION OF CALBUCO VOLCANO, CHILE (LATITUDE 41 20 S )

Twenty four samples of xenoliths and country rocks from the 1961 lava flow of Calbuco volcano have been studied. Fourteen samples have been analyzed for major elements and P, Ni, Ba, Cr, V, Zr, Sc, Y, and Sr. Five of these samples were further analyzed for Sm, Nd, Sr, and Pb isotope ratios. Seventeen samples were analyzed under the microscope and three samples were analyzed by microprobe fo...

State of Stress from Focal Mechanisms Before and After the 1992 Landers Earthquake Sequence

The state of stress in the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ) changed significantly because of the occurrence of the 1992 Mw 6.1 Joshua Tree and the Mw 7.3 Landers earthquakes. To quantify this change, focal mechanisms from the 1975 Galway Lake sequence, the 1979 Homestead Valley sequence, background seismicity from 1981 to 1991, and the 1992 Landers sequence are inverted for the state of str...
